If you drove U.S. Highways #2 - #10 - #20 or #30, during the Fifties and Sixties.
THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!!
The author -- DAVE Taylor, drove these Highways for ten years.
THE HIGHWAY WAS MY HOME
This is not just a catchy title as you will see, it is more a statement of fact.
As a Line Driver on "The East Run" we would live in our Rig for seven or eight days each trip, averaging three trips a month. After ten years on this run, it is easy to see how one might become somewhat confused when using the term "Home" -- is this "Where your heart is" or "Where you hang your hat?"
I had several reasons for writing this book.
Firstly it seemed that in my "declining years" it was becoming harder to recall who was involved in some of these episodes.
Secondly while a lot of this material might at best be considered "interesting trivial" I believe there is some which could be considered "Historical" and as such should be preserved.
My third and possibly most compelling reason being -- the joy of reminiscing over the "Good Old Days" that used to be. After sometime spent mulling over ways to tie these numerous episodes together, I decided to try writing some poetry; after reading "The Cariboo Road" and "The East Run" you will realise that this is what tied it all together.
Obviously Truck Drivers will relate to this account and appreciate the differences between driving now and driving forty odd years ago.
As I wrote this book I was behind the wheel again and could see every bump in the road and visualise every hill and curve; whether it be in the "Fraser Canyon" or the "Big Sky Country" of Montana. The old familiar "Truck Stops" appeared as if by magic and conversations I had forty years ago seemed to have taken place only yesterday. I have tried, hopefully with some success to bring this scene into view not only to Truckers but to ordinary people who have had no insight into this way of life.
